Where LVP makes the most sense

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is strongest in rooms where moisture, spills, and heavy traffic are a concern. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, mudrooms, and open first floors are common LVP projects around the Capital Region.

If you want the feel and long-term value of real wood, the showroom may also walk you through engineered hardwood options for the same space.

When LVP is the right fit

Why people choose luxury vinyl plank

  • Waterproof Core: Useful for kitchens, baths, and basement installations.
  • High Durability: Thick mil-wear layers resist scratches from large dogs.
  • Cost-Effective Luxury: Realistic wood/stone visuals for less than real hardwood.
  • Easy Maintenance: Simple sweeping and damp mopping keeps it looking new.

What to choose carefully

  • Resale Value: Doesn't add the same permanent home value as solid wood.
  • Cannot Refinish: Damaged planks must be replaced, not sanded.
  • Subfloor Prep: Requires a very flat subfloor to prevent locking mechanism failure.

Plan around moisture, traffic, and subfloor prep

The right LVP depends on the room, the subfloor, and how much water, grit, and daily traffic the floor needs to handle. Product thickness, wear layer, locking system, and prep matter as much as color.

  • For kitchens, baths, basements, and entries, compare waterproof construction and wear-layer ratings for that room.
  • For active homes, ask about scratch resistance, dent resistance, texture, and cleaning expectations.
  • For uneven floors, talk through leveling, transitions, and how the plank will lock together.
  • Bring photos, room sizes, cabinet colors, and trim colors so the showroom can help with undertones.

Frequently Asked Questions About LVP

Key information regarding waterproof vinyl planks, underlayment, and wear layer requirements.

Is luxury vinyl plank (LVP) really 100% waterproof?

Yes, LVP is made of synthetic materials (typically a stone-plastic composite core or SPC) that will not swell, buckle, or lose structural integrity when exposed to standing water. This makes it ideal for kitchens, mudrooms, and basements. However, keep in mind that LVP does not waterproof your subfloor—water can still seep through the seams if left unaddressed.

Can LVP be installed over radiant heated floors?

Yes, most high-quality SPC and WPC vinyl planks can be installed over hydronic radiant floor heating systems. The heating system should be embedded in the concrete or subfloor, and the surface temperature should not exceed the manufacturer's limit (usually 85°F).

Do I need a separate underlayment for LVP flooring?

Many modern vinyl planks come with a pre-attached acoustic underlayment (cork or foam). If your LVP has an attached pad, you should not install a separate soft underlayment, as it can make the joints too bouncy and lead to locking system failure. You may, however, still need a 6-mil poly vapor barrier over concrete subfloors.

What is a wear layer, and what thickness is recommended?

The wear layer is the clear protective top coat on vinyl flooring. For active homes with pets and children, we recommend a wear layer of at least 12 mil, though 20 mil is the commercial-grade standard that provides maximum protection against scratches, dents, and stains.
